After 15 years of not playing, I decided to pick up flute again. Nancy was wonderful!!! She was patient, informative and to the point. Not only did she help me sort through my options, she offered her professional opinion. I was so grateful for her insight and guidance. In the end, I purchased a Yamaha 361 from her. I love it!

Hi Nancy. You did a great job repadding my Brannen piccolo! Of course you have the pads seating perfectly, but you got all the key openings to the right heights. They never really opened enough. Honestly, it has never played this well! With gratitude, Lenny Lopatin

Nancy recommended and provided a beautiful Jupiter 507 flute for my daughter, an aspiring beginner. The used instrument arrived in perfect condition with a warm and full tone. It was just what my daughter needed. We were beneficiaries of not only Nancy's expert workmanship but of her experience and advice, as well. For all of your flute needs, I recommend Nancy and FluteStar without hesitation.

It was a wonderful experience working with you. Our daughter can already make new noises only after two days in class and one private lesson. She is taking great pride in her flute by the care she is exhibiting when cleaning the flute. I am sure we will have many wonderful and beautiful new sounds ringing in our ears by the end of the year. Thank you again for preparing the flute. Rodney

Dear Nancy, I can't thank you enough for adjusting the pads on my flute. I got a new Yamaha 461 and was dismayed to find the lower notes were "airy" even when I pressed hard on the keys. I only upgraded to an all silver B-foot Yamaha so I could play the old hymns and my new flute "fresh-out-of-the-box" wasn't right. Of course I shipped it in its original packaging straight to you and waited anxiously, hoping it was just an adjustment problem. Voila! When I got it back it was the new flute I thought I was getting in the first place. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Plus, the lower profile key caps were a nice bonus. And who shall wear the robe and crown, Oh Lord, show me the way! I've got the low B and it is so sweet! Thanks again, in Jesus' service, worshipping, Meg

When I bought my Yamaha 581 (Sankyo NRS-1 headjoint) on ebay, I was all excited because I used to have an 800 model with the same headjoint. I got a deal on it, but the previous owner had beaten the daylights out of it. I don't think it had ever been adjusted, had many dings, and the lip plate was coming off (which I didn't even notice - I thought the cork was leaking!). Not only did Nancy clean it up so it looks beautiful, but she replaced the pads and adjusted the flute to where I honestly cannot tell the difference in mechanical action between this 581 and my old 800 model I used to have. (It's been a few years, but still!) The pads seal perfectly and I barely have to touch the keys to play. Not only that, but she hand-delivered the headjoint to Dr. Eldred Spell to re-solder the lip plate on, rather than take a stab at it herself, since he has more experience with this sort of repair - now that is what I call service! :) Now I have the most enormous sound, tonal flexibility, and I'm sailing through technical passages that were a nightmare before this work was done. I feel confident that my show in October is going to be wonderful now! Thanks, Nancy! I'll be back!

It's been almost 2 years since I bought my Yamaha from Nancy and I couldn't be happier with it! The tone is beautiful, it's fabulous to play and my bandmates commented immediately on its tone quality and volume. Now it needs a good cleaning, and of course I'm coming back to Nancy... she's got a solid customer in me! :) Vicki O'Brien ~ Paddy's Leather Breeches, Irish/Celtic band ~ Tears of Fancy, Renaissance group

Nancy - Thanks so much for the Yamaha 32 piccolo. I was searching for a used piccolo for my daughter when I just happen to find your website. I like it that you provide a 7 day complete refund and 1 year warranty. You were even so kind as to extend the time for the complete refund, so my daughter's flute instructor could look over the piccolo. The piccolo arrived in great condition and sounds tremendous. Nancy: Thanks so much for the great "flute rehab" you recently did on my daughter's flute and piccolo. I first found you on the web when looking for a second flute for my daughter to use in marching band. We got a wonderful used, but better than new, instrument. Olivia was thrilled with it, and we decided to send her primary flute and piccolo to you for your expert care. Once again, we were more than pleased with the product of your labor and excellent care. I purchased a used Yamaha 371 from Nancy and just received it a couple of days ago. Wow! Although I am just a beginner, I found the low notes much easier to play than a flute I borrowed for a few weeks. It's nice to know that I have a flute that is set up right (probably better than a new flute!).

For those reading this guest book and contemplating whether or not to buy a "pre-owned" flute from Nancy, or whether to send your flute to her for maintenance or repair, let me reassure you that you have found the flute technician with "The Right Stuff"- Nancy Shinn. Read Nancy's articles on her website; she knows what she's talking about. As a long-time musician, playing all through school, and 22 years with the Army Bands, I have plenty of experience with woodwinds, including some flute, but being primarily a clarinet player over the years. After purchasing a reconditioned Yamaha 221 flute from Nancy, I can say that this instrument was obviously adjusted by an expert- even with my relative inexperience on the flute, and my still-developing flute embochure, the 221 plays marvelously! All notes in the low register just "pop out", with light key pressure, signifying precise placement of the pads and nit-picky adjustment of the key mechanism. I only wish Nancy also worked on clarinets; I had to search for another technician to service my Buffet Crampon R13. Once I felt comfortable with her level of expertise, I ordered the flute. She put me on her work schedule and delivered the Yamaha flute on time, and even included extras which shows her generosity and the lengths to which she strives to please her clients. She is also very personable, friendly, and has a good sense of humor. :-) Thank you, Nancy, for such a great customer experience and for giving me this beautiful instrument- even though it is a "student" flute, I believe that it will serve me well in a professional context for quite some time. And I will be sending the flute back to you for the Clean, Oil, and Adjust maintenance to continue its superb playability. Hi Nancy, The flute just came. It's great. I can't remember the last time I could get the low B or even the C, now they are easy. It's been so long since I could get the really high notes that I've forgotten the fingering and now have to go back and review. You've opened up a whole new realm for me. Now I can work on getting the fingers to move a little faster so I can start playing Bach Sonatas with my church accompanist. I'll be playing a simple piece in June for a friends wedding, Bach's "Air on the G String" arranged for flute and piano. Her bridesmaids will process to it. I'll also be playing with him for a prelude, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring". Thank you so much--I love my flute again, Jean

Within the past year, I pulled out my old Gem, which I loved and served me well through junior high and high school, to serve in our church's orchestra (www.fellowshipbaptist-md.org). I was having problems with my flute and after a technician's suggestion of an overhaul, our music director (a professional musician in his "day job") suggested that I put my money into a new flute, particularly a Yamaha. Since I am now a stay-at-home mom, the thought of spending almost $1000 on a new Yamaha seemed impossible. That's when our first chair flutist came across the Flutestar website. Nancy was very helpful in my decision-making process and sold me a wonderful, better-than-new Yamaha student model in a price-range I could afford. Her 7 day trial period and one year warranty give you the peace of mind you want when buying by mail. She is a professional and an expert in her field. Thank you, Nancy!

I am an older citizen learning the flute. I had purchased a student flute, but could see that I was in need of an upgrade. I searched music stores, ebay, craigslist, and I read everything I could find on an intermedidate flute. One day, while searching online, I happened to come upon Flutestar and Nancy Shinn. I began a conversation with her that I felt I could trust. I let it go for a month or so, and, once again, I came upon her name. This time we got into more detailed conversation and she guided me in the right direction for my particular need. I now have a beautiful silver, open hole Yamaha flute which I am so very pleased with. If you are looking for a flute, you really need to put Nancy Shinn and Flutestar at the very top of your list. She is very personable, efficient and knowledgeable and promptly answers all questions. She will guide you in the right direction. Thanks again, Nancy.

Nancy, Meeting you was a real joy. As you looked at my mangled Mateki flute which I hadn't played for several years because of it's condition and you talked about how you could fix it, I felt immediately relaxed about leaving it in your hands. I trust you completely. You did such a good job and I feel like I have a new, resurrected flute! I am so grateful that you are in this area and are working on flutes in the mid-price ranges...I have been longing for just such a person as you for many years. Hi Nancy, My flute arrived home safely today. As I expected, it's perfect! It looks beautiful, the action feels great, and every note spoke instantly and clearly. The plugs are exactly what I hoped for - I barely feel them, unlike some of the hard plastic ones in the flutes on display at our local music store (the ones that don't allow you to feel the finger depression in the key). I hope I won't be using them long, but in the meantime, they're not a nuisance. The cleaning cloth (you made) is so charming! Perfect for a quick wipe-down during practice. Since my goal is to attain a level of playing ability equal to my love of the instrument and this is the next leg of the journey, you've made this adult student VERY happy indeed. I'll be in touch soon regarding my student flute, and the Altieri bag purchase. For now, I'm off to ogle my "new" flute some more... Warmest Regards, Cheryl

Hi Nancy, Just wanted to let you know that I'm really enjoying the new life you put into my Gemeinhardt flute and piccolo! Everything seems a bit easier to play. I'd never used plugs, and was pleasantly surprised to find how much the RH3 helps when I stretch for C#/C/B - so thank you for including those. Also, it was thoughtful of you to send a cleaning rod with the flute. I do have one, but I didn't ship it because that case (which IHMO is an el-cheapo -- though of course not cheap! replacement for the original wooden case grumble grumble) doesn't hold it securely in place. I will certainly recommend your service to anyone who may ask. Best regards, Kathy

I asked for and received expert advice from Nancy on the purchase of my daughter's first piccolo, an experience that was much more complicated than I had envisioned. Nancy made it easy, explaining why one piccolo is better than another, and even recommending a model and make. Luckily, she happened to have one in stock that she had worked on. After trying the few I could find locally, I purchased Nancy's YPC32 for my daughter and couldn't be happier. She has really taken to the piccolo and has found the transition between flute and piccolo much easier than we expected. She has already been asked to play it in the 8th grade band (she is in 7th grade). I couldn't be happier with the purchase or the service we received. I will definitely be writing to Nancy again when my daughter needs an open hole flute!

We have two flutists in our family and both are in high school and college marching bands so we have piccolos as well as flutes. Nancy wonderfully services our instruments and our girls are always pleased with how much better the instruments play once Nancy has worked on them. Over the past few years since we discovered Nancy, she has provided quality work (even in an Easter holiday emergency one night!. We have purchased a refurbished instrument from her and we have had her refurbish one of our flutes as it was not quite right from the factory. Each time we pick up our instrument, Nancy reminds us to call her if we have any problems so Nancy stands behind her work, but we have never had to return for further repair. Previously, I sent Nancy my old piccolo to be overhauled, and it returned sounding better than most of the brand new professional brands that I've tried! I decided that once it comes time to send my flute off for it's annual COA, I would send it to her. Turns out I had many more problems than expected, and she took the time to fix them. When my flute returned, I was amazed. Not only was I able to make notes that I had to force out play effortlessly, but she had improved the sound overall. I find myself better able to change color of the sound, as well an increased ability to follow dynamics! I daresay, she made my flute sound better than it did when I first took it out of its case two years ago! The only downside is that now that I have a great flute, I can't blame my difficulties on a shoddy instrument anymore. XD Thanks a bunch, Nancy! You did it again!

I recently purchased a used flute from Nancy. It is a Yamaha Allegro to be used by my daughter as her high school concert band instrument. Before purchasing, my daughter and her private teacher performed an assessment of the tuning, ease of playing, tone, etc. of the Allegro and 4 other flutes. The others were a Yamaha 481H and 3 made by Jupiter. All four were brand new flutes from a local music store. In the end, the two that made the cut were the Allegro and the 481H, both Yamaha flutes. The decision then came down to price and features. Both were exactly the same cost but the Allegro had additional features that my daughter preferred. These were off-set G and split E. Both had a B foot and gizmo. Nancy did a superb job of finding a good used instrument and sprucing it up such that it was chosen over 4 brand new flutes. I highly recommend Nancy for her expertise when looking for a flute.

Nancy was a delight to work with and the flute she sold to my student was absolutely beautiful and in just peak condition with a fantastic tone. Her tracking, shipping and payment process were both flexible and fast. I urge others to purchase flutes and piccolos from her. I had purchased recently a new professional flute for myself, and after working with her for my student, I wish I had known about her earlier. I intend to look at buying a piccolo from her.

Nancy did a beautiful job on both my handmade flute and my piccolo. She is very honest, knowledgeable, curious and has an excellent sense of humor. These traits make her an excellent ally when searching for that perfect-for-you (or your child) instrument, whether it is a first instrument, a step-up to achieve great things at the State solo and ensemble contest, or that dream flute for college. Her prices are probably the best bargain to be found anywhere. You might find something cheaper, but it won't likely be of the same quality, and more importantly it won't come with Nancy's assistance.

My teacher, Helen Spielman, and I had a great time playing it and just looking it over. Wow, what a difference your spilled hands made to my flute!! It's a pleasure to practice. A note for others -- Nancy lets nothing go unnoticed on a flute. She called me and discussed/explained what was going on with my flute before she made the extra repairs. Dear Nancy: I received my flute Thursday, and I have to tell you, it sounds and feels so different that my music group I play with said it's 100% better sounding. I have a hearing loss, and didn't hear the "airy" sounds that it made previously, I just knew that it didn't play well, and that it sometimes took a concerted effort to play certain high notes. Thank you again for all your hard work. In the future, I plan to upgrade my flute, and I know just where to get it! You're awesome! Thank you, Cindy

Nancy was a godsend (and I don't use that word often) . The process of buying my daughter a new flute was long and challenging. Of the various "sellers" I talked to, Nancy was tops. I could always rely on her information being accurate, and she was courteous and professional. Unlike some other sellers, she never badmouthed other flutes I was considering. Instead, she would carefully think of a way to state things in a factual way, and would openly let me know if anything she was saying was really more opinion. I appreciated her so much throughout the selection process -- Thank You, Grazie, Merci !!!

It was a easy and wonderful experience buying a flute from Nancy. As a dedicated adult beginner, I was looking for a quality flute that I could grow with and into, not wanting to upgrade in a year or two. Nancy understood this and found me a beautiful used Altus with the configuration that fit my current and future needs, and at a great price. I think that it makes sense to buy from a technician who inspects and properly sets up a flute as part of the sale. It arrived across the continent in a couple of days, carefully packed and in perfect condition. The Altus is everything that Nancy said it would be and gives me great pleasure every time I pick it up. Nancy also gave easy to understand answers to my questions and provided a lot of great information. I will certainly deal with her again for any major work or another purchase.

Nancy, McKenzie is thrilled with her new flute! She loved the case and it was money well spent for the cleaning cloth - the musical notes were just too special. I've never seen a teenager so excited about cleaning something. If she moved up from 7th chair to 3rd chair with the old flute I can only hope this flute will spur her on. She said it sounds soooo much better. She is at the workshop with the ASO as I'm writing this note. She will be finished up around 2:00 and they will present a concert side by side with the students. She is a very self-confident person in her own right but I'm sure she has added confidence with this new instrument. McKenzie wants to attend Duke University. We know that's quite a lofty goal but she's a bright girl and talented in a lot of areas. I think she has the potential to make it. Her ultimate goal is to become a veterinarian which is more difficult than becoming a medical doctor because there are so few Vet schools in the country and the standards are extremely high. Maybe you'll see an article one day in some magazine about a female vet who helps soothe the horses she's treating by playing the flute for them. You know that will be her! Thanks again! Jo Hudgins

We don't play the flute, but Doris's older sister, now 86, had a silver flute which our parents purchased around 1932 for her to play. And how she played, for years in the band and orchestra, and with a trio (piano, violin) of family members, and for years at church until she put it away in a closet. When she learned our granddaughter(12) was playing flute in the school band, my sister gave it to us for the granddaughter. Of course it was badly tarnished and pads were gone, etc.A local flutist recommended Nancy to do the overhaul, and she did a beautiful job, complete with new fitted case AND demonstration in the livingroom of their lovely mountain home!
