INTRODUCING MY  SET UP SERVICE FOR NEW FLUTES AND PICCOLOS
Some  flute sales companies offer a set up service on your new flute or piccolo; others, however, do not.  If you've bought a brand new flute or piccolo and wonder why it doesn't play just right, the instrument probably hasn't been "set up."

What is a "set up?"  A set up consists of a number of steps, each of which will improve the sound, response, and "feel" of your new instrument.  Included are the following:

1.  The headcork is removed, glued to the metal discs of the cork assembly, waxed and re-set in the headjoint to insure a good seal and keep it from shifting easily.  This step can make a headcork last for years.

2.  The tenons are checked and corrected for proper fit, improving ease of instrument assembly.

3.  Spring tensions are checked and corrected.

4.  Each pad is inspected, tested for air tightness, and shimmed to make sure it covers the tone hole completely and without having to use heavy finger pressure.

5.  Adjustments are corrected and set in place.

6.  Lost motion, if any, is removed.  Key heights are set for best possible venting, sound and intonation.

I'm continually amazed at the problems I find and correct in brand new instruments.  If you'd like me to work on yours, contact me for an appointment.  I'll work at my regular rate of $60 per hour, with most set ups taking between 2 and 3 hours.
